Avon Heritage North Students visit the Wetlands with the Old Women Creek Reservation
Mrs. Meikle’s 5th grade students discussed the important role that wetlands play in Lorain County and throughout the world. The students discussed the animals that live in local wetlands and how this habitat prevents flooding. The students enjoyed the comparison of a wetlands to a sponge.
Using materials from the nature center, a video clip of Bill Nye the Science Guy and pictures taken on the grounds of Old Women Creek the students have a better understanding of the importance of wetlands. With the recent development in the community of Avon the students have a better understanding of why housing and retail development of local wetlands have led to increased flooding.
Thanks Old Women Creek!
